What to do when you are locked out of your house

So, you find yourself locked out of your house. What do you do? Follow the steps below and I will have you back inside in no time.

Stay calm

It’s easy to lose your head when you find yourself locked out, especially as it’s usually at a time when you are busy, and it is highly inconvenient. Having a calm head will help you get on top of things and resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Check to see if you have left a window or door open

Before calling an experienced locksmith in Chelmsford it’s always best to check your house in case you have an open door or window on another part of the house. If a door is unlocked, happy days but if it’s a window that is open, only try to go through it if it is safe to do so. You don’t want a trip to the hospital on top of being locked out.

Check with friends or family who may have a spare key

If you have given a spare key to a relative, room mate or neighbour, check with them to see if they are available to swing by and let you in. If you don’t have anyone you can trust with a spare key it may be worth having a key safe installed so you have a spare key on hand if you lock yourself out again in the future. I install key safes so get in touch for a quote!

Call a reputable locksmith

If no doors/windows are open and no one has a spare key, then it’s time to call a local locksmith.

Follow our guide HERE on how to choose a reputable locksmith so you don’t get scammed.

Upon calling the locksmith, explain your situation in-depth and ask them to provide a response time and cost. Most reputable locksmiths will be happy to provide these 2 things. If they are being vague about the response time, cost, or any other details then it may be worth trying a different locksmith.

If you are in Essex and you need an emergency locksmith you can call me on 07376249965, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Find somewhere safe to wait until the locksmith arrives

Emergency locksmith response times are on average 30-60 minutes and although this is fast, you will need to find yourself somewhere safe and dry to wait until they arrive. If you explain your situation to a friendly neighbour, most will be more than happy for you to wait in their house until the locksmith arrives. If this is not an option, then wait in a car if you have access, or failing that a part of your house or garden that is sheltered.

Why you shouldn’t try to gain entry yourself

You may think it’s best or worthwhile to try and gain entry yourself to try and save yourself time and money but, in my experience, this normally causes more issues and costs the homeowner more money. I have seen first-hand the unnecessary damage caused where a customer tried to gain entry and in the process either damaged the lock, handles, door, or door mechanism. This will bump up the cost of parts needed and in some instances, the labour rate as more time and effort is needed to undo what has been done by the homeowner

If you follow the advice above when you get locked out, you will be back inside in no time and in the safest and cost-effective way.
